Ron was born on June 30, 1947, in Des Moines, IA, to Harold and Belva (Conkel) McHone. At a young age, he realized his need for a savior and accepted Jesus Christ. He grew up in rural Elkhart, IA, and graduated in 1965 from North Polk in Alleman. He attended Iowa State University and transferred to Grace College of the Bible in Omaha, NE, and graduated in 1971. Then he continued his education at Calvary Bible College, Kansas City, MO, and achieved his Master of Arts in Biblical Literature in 1975. During the summers, he worked at Pepsi. In 1977, Ron and Irene were short-term missionaries in Belize, Central America. They moved to White Oak, IA, where they built their home and raised their family, and resided there for 43 years.
Ron fell in love with Irene Nickel, and they were married on June 7, 1969, in Avondale, MO. They had three children, Kimberly, Douglas (Doug), and Dacia. Ron worked in the trucking industry. Upon retirement, he served the children of North Polk School District as a beloved bus driver for over 10 years. He played the saxophone and shared his gifts with his church, and was a member of the Ballard Community Performing Arts Band. He enjoyed directing and performing Christian drama for his church. He served at Polk City Evangelical Free Church as a Sunday School teacher and AWANA leader, served as an elder at White Oak Church, and enjoyed serving as a visiting pastor of several local churches.
Ron’s passion was to spread the love of Jesus to all he met; family, friends, and students. He never met a stranger and would hunt down anyone with a North Polk HS, ISU, or any Iowa shirt to talk to them.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Irene McHone, son Doug (Dayna) of Waukee, IA and daughter Dacia (Andrew) Olson of Otsego, MN; grandchildren Ben (Hyda) McHone, Ana Jankovic, Abigail, Lydia, Micah, Eli, and Hadassah Olson; great-grandson Arlo McHone; and brother Steve (Deb) McHone of Ramsey, MN.
In death, Ron rejoins his parents, Harold and Belva McHone, brother Roger, his daughter Kimberly, and his father and mother-in-law, Ben and Doris Nickel.
